Mishima Skywalk is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan, a 400 metre ribbon of walkway slung across a forested valley with Mt. Fuji rising straight ahead and Suruga Bay glittering to the south. On a clear day the composition is almost unfairly good: the bridge, the valley, the sea and the mountain in one frame.

Crossing and beyond

The bridge sways just enough to remind you where you are, and the Fuji view improves with every step out from the anchorage. On the far side, a hillside of activities has grown up around the crossing, including a long zipline that runs beside the bridge for those who prefer their valley views at speed, forest walks, and seasonal flower displays. Cafes and stalls on both sides trade on the local specialties, and the whole site is unashamedly built for a fun couple of hours rather than solemn nature appreciation.

Catching Fuji in the clear

The mountain shows itself most reliably in the morning and in the colder months, when the air is crisp, and can vanish into cloud by afternoon in summer. If Fuji is your priority, go early and check the mountain from Mishima before committing. The bridge itself is worth the walk even under cloud.

Getting there

From Mishima Station, an easy shinkansen stop from Tokyo, buses bound for Motohakone via the Skywalk leave regularly and reach the bridge in about twenty five minutes. The same route continues to Hakone, so the Skywalk slots neatly into a Tokyo to Hakone journey.
