Lake Ashi fills an ancient volcanic caldera at the heart of Hakone, and cruising its length is one of the region’s defining pleasures. On a clear day the cone of Mt Fuji rises beyond the ridgelines as you sail, and the vermilion torii gate of Hakone Shrine stands in the shallows near Moto-Hakone, one of Japan’s most photographed waterside scenes.

Cruising the lake

Boats link the piers at Togendai, Hakone-machi and Moto-Hakone, with a full crossing taking around half an hour and round trip cruises returning you to your starting point. Open decks give the best photography, while enclosed lounges keep the mountain weather at bay. The lake sits high enough that even summer crossings can be breezy, and morning sailings offer the best odds of a visible Fuji before cloud builds.

Building the classic loop

The cruise forms a leg of the celebrated Hakone circuit alongside the Tozan railway, cable car and ropeway, so many travellers ride one way and continue around rather than returning by boat. From the southern piers, the Hakone Shrine, the old Tokaido cedar avenue and the checkpoint museum at Hakone-machi are all within a walkable stretch of shoreline.

Getting there

Togendai pier connects directly to the Hakone Ropeway from Owakudani and Sounzan, while buses from Hakone-Yumoto and Odawara reach Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi in around 35 minutes. Odakyu services from Shinjuku serve Hakone-Yumoto, the region’s gateway station.
