Hofu does not make many international itineraries, which is precisely its appeal: a compact city on the Seto Inland Sea side of Yamaguchi with history out of all proportion to its size, and none of the crowds that attend it elsewhere. This pass bundles the city’s sights into one ticket, a nudge to travellers on the San’yo route to step off the shinkansen corridor for half a day.

What the pass covers

The pass gathers entry and perks across Hofu’s main attractions; the exact lineup of inclusions is maintained on the booking page, so read the current details there. Its value works best across a full unhurried day in town, which is what Hofu deserves anyway.

Hofu’s heavyweights

Hofu Tenmangu claims the title of the oldest of Japan’s thousands of Tenmangu shrines, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar turned deity of learning, and its hilltop halls above a long stone stair are the city’s signature view. The Mori Garden and its museum preserve the vast residence of the Mori clan, the family that ruled this coast for centuries and helped topple the shogunate, while Suo Kokubunji carries the city’s Buddhist history back more than a millennium.

Getting there

Take the shinkansen to Shin Yamaguchi, then a local JR San’yo Line train to Hofu Station, around 20 minutes. Hofu Tenmangu is a walkable 15 minutes or so from the station through the town’s old approach streets, and the remaining sights sit within easy bus or taxi range, making the whole city manageable without a car.
