The Otsuka Museum of Art in Naruto is one of the strangest and most rewarding museums in Japan. It contains not a single original painting. Instead, more than a thousand Western masterpieces have been reproduced at full size on ceramic panels, from the Sistine Chapel ceiling to Guernica, letting you walk from ancient frescoes to the moderns in an afternoon, and photograph all of it.

Why reproductions work

Skepticism melts quickly inside. The ceramic technique captures colour and scale with startling fidelity, and entire environments have been rebuilt, including a full Sistine Chapel hall and the Scrovegni Chapel, experiences you cannot combine anywhere else on the planet. Because nothing is fragile, you can stand close, take photos freely and see works whose originals are scattered across dozens of countries, some no longer viewable at all. The building itself burrows dramatically into a hillside by the Naruto Strait.

Planning your visit

This is a marathon. The viewing route stretches for kilometres across multiple floors, so wear comfortable shoes, take the suggested highlights course if time is short, and use the cafes to pace yourself. Combine it with a boat cruise to see the Naruto whirlpools, ten minutes away, for a full day at the strait.

Getting there

From Tokushima Station, trains run to Naruto Station with buses onward to the museum, and direct buses also serve the area from Tokushima. Coming from Kansai, highway buses between Kobe or Osaka and Tokushima stop near Naruto Park after crossing the Onaruto Bridge, making the museum reachable as a long day trip from the Kansai cities.
