Ghibli Museum

For fans of Miyazaki Hayao, a trip to Japan will not be complete without dropping by the Ghibli Museum.

Located in the city of Mitaka, a short distance outside of downtown Tokyo, the museum features masterpieces produced by one of the country’s most popular animation studios, the Studio Ghibli, best known for its globally-acclaimed animated feature films, such as “Spirited Away”, “My Neighbour Totoro”, “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea” and “Princess Mononoke”.

Fuji Five Lakes

Found at Mount Fuji’s northern base, the five lakes – Saiko, Motosuko, Shojiko, Kawaguchiko and Yamanakako – offer the best seats for a scenic view of the country’s highest mountain, so it is almost always crowded with tourists who want to capture the mountain’s majestic and grand form.

Other activities that can be done in the area are hiking, fishing, camping, and hot spring baths.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Living up to its name as the happiest place on earth, the Disneyland and DisneySea theme parks in Tokyo are a popular destination for families on vacation in Japan.

Universal Studios

For families travelling to the Kansai region, set aside a day to spend at the Universal Studios Japan.

Its eight sections provide endless entertainment for people of all ages, from merry-go-rounds for kids to heart-stopping roller coasters for the grownups.

Miyajima

Just less than an hour by boat from Hiroshima, Miyajima island is known for its gigantic torii gate that appears to be floating on water during high tides.

It has the Itsukushima Shrine, Senjokaku, Miyajima Aquarium, and Daisho-in Temple, as well as a number of hiking trails towards different parts of the town and to Mount Misen.

Himeji

About a three-hour bullet train ride from Tokyo, Himeji is a city in the Kansai region that is notable for the Himeji Castle, a castle complex situated on top of a hill in the heart of the town.

Built in the 1300s, it is Japan’s most visited castle, with a unique architectural style and numerous concealed spaces and portholes, which were common features of castles back in the day.
