If you only use your Japan Rail Pass for train travel, you are leaving something on the table. Pass holders can also claim discounts at hotels in the JR Hotel Group, a network of properties owned and operated by the Japan Railways companies. Most sit directly on top of, or a short walk from, a major JR station, which makes them convenient in a way that is hard to beat when you are moving between cities every couple of days.
Show your Japan Rail Pass when you check in, or mention it when booking directly with the hotel, and the property applies its pass-holder rate. The size of the discount varies by hotel and by season, and some properties also extend benefits such as room upgrades, late checkout or a discount in the hotel restaurant.
The discount applies to the pass holder. Some hotels extend it to a travelling companion sharing the room, but that is at each property’s discretion rather than a group-wide rule.
The JR Hotel Group spans the country, from Sapporo down to Kyushu, and includes several distinct brands. Hotel Granvia properties are generally the most upmarket and are usually built into the station complex itself. Hotel Mets properties are smaller business hotels beside suburban and regional stations. Nikko and JR-East hotels sit between the two.
Among the better known members are the Tokyo Station Hotel, a luxury property in the restored red brick station building near the Imperial Palace, and the Hotel Granvia Kyoto, which sits directly above Kyoto Station.
Membership changes as properties open, close and rebrand, so rather than reproduce a list that dates quickly, we point you to the official directory.
